The ISS is an orbiting laboratory

for conducting scientific and technological experiments

in microgravity.

It is an extraterrestrial base

for learning how to live and work

in a remote, isolated and confined environment

to prepare for exploring other planets.

It is also a home

to the astronauts and cosmonauts there.

The NASA astronaut,

who is scheduled to head home Tuesday,

called the International Space Station “a magical place”

but said living there for 11 months had been

like being “in the woods camping for a year.”

The International Space Station

is as far as humans go in space these days,

but it is at just the right distance

to capture astonishing images of Earth.
