We’ve dreamed of this… Northern Lights as a graphic novel?

And now it’s happened,

20 years after Philip Pullman published

the first volume of His Dark Materials.

The first book in a stunning three-volume

graphic novel adaptation of Northern Lights,

the Graphic Novel: Volume 1

has been published in English.

There’s a fascinating history here though,

the graphic novel was first published in France!

It was adapted by French writer Stéphane Melchoir

with artwork by Clément Oubrerie.

Now their graphic novel

has been retranslated back into English by Annie Eaton.

Aline Kominsky-Crumb    1948-2022

née Goldsmith

American cartoonist

known for her feminist themes

and often brutally frank,

highly personal

and self-critical work

(...)

Kominsky-Crumb (...)

was a close collaborator

of her cartoonist husband,

Robert Crumb,

died of cancer

(...)

Kominsky-Crumb

was known for work

that was not only autobiographical

but often bracingly sexual

— focusing on her insecurities —

and explicit.

Or just raunchy.

An early cover

of the"Twisted Sisters" anthology

— on which she collaborated

with cartoonist Diane Noomin

during her early years in the Bay Area —

depicted her sitting

nearly naked on the toilet,

wondering how many calories

there were in a cheese enchilada.

Neal Adams    USA    1941-2022

artist who changed the game

with his realistic illustrations

in the 1960s and '70s.

Considered

somewhat of a superhero himself

in the comic book world,

he was the champion of his peers,

pushing for artist rights

and fair pay.

Batman, Superman,

the Green Lantern and the X-Men

are just a handful of the characters

that Adams reimagined beginning

in the late 1960s.

He flipped the script

by straying from

the traditional cartoonish look

found in comics.

Instead, Adams sketched

heroes and villains

with a gritty, realistic flair.

Novelists do comics:

Masks, by Gillian Flynn and Dave Gibbons

To mark the British Library's

forthcoming exhibition of British comics,

Guardian Weekend asked well-known authors

to collaborate with graphic artists

to create new works.

Here, Gillian Flynn,

author of the global bestseller Gone Girl,

makes her comic debut with Dave Gibbons,

the graphic story artist

who drew Alan Moore's Watchmen comic series,

in a new short story in which they look

at what happens when parents turn vigilante
