My parents, Ruth and C.J., were married 40 years.

Later in life and in their relationship

my mother struggled with mental illness.

Out of love, my father hid it from the world, including me.

The reason he hid it from me was

that he wanted me to be able to focus on photojournalism.

Captions were written by the photographer.

during his final days in New Orleans,

my parents were able to find quiet moments together.
