Roots    ABC        USA

“Roots” transfixed Americans

— first as an overnight best seller

by Alex Haley,

then as an ABC mini-series,

which drew 100 million viewers (...).

It made the slave trade and black history

inescapable parts of national popular culture

and produced a unique moment

when ordinary Americans

talked about slavery in workplaces,

bars, churches and schools.

Spitting Image

It was on 26 February 1984

that the caricatures of Peter Fluck and Law

were brought to life in puppet form for Spitting Image.

The show ran on ITV for 18 series,

bringing to the world

a jive-talking banjo-strumming Pope John Paul II,

a CND supporting Queen,

a leather-clad Norman Tebbit

and many more.

“The Beverly Hillbillies”

burst upon the scene

on the evening of Sept. 26, 1962.

“In tonight’s fun-filled premiere,

Buddy Ebsen stars

as the head of a proud hillbilly clan

that discovers an oil well at home

that leads to a new home in Hollywood!”

a CBS print advertisement proclaimed.

Other cast members included

Irene Ryan as the flinty matriarch Granny

and Max Baer Jr., as the bumpkin cousin

Jethro Bodine.

At its height, in the ’60s,

“The Beverly Hillbillies”

was a family favorite watched by millions.

But by the end of a decade

marked by assassinations,

urban riots and the Vietnam War,

American tastes were moving away

from such innocent, cornpone fare,

and the series ended in 1971.

An effort to revive it in the fall of 1981,

through a two-hour movie pilot titled

“The Return of the Beverly Hillbillies,”

fell flat.

But the show’s fans,

many of them children

who grew up watching it,

remained fond of the series

(it was later broadcast in reruns) (...)

‘Gilligan’s Island’        1960s        USA

Though “Gilligan’s Island”

lasted only three seasons,

canceled in 1967,

it hardly slipped from the horizon.

Endless reruns ensued,

and the cast members

had a series of encore performances.

Ms. Wells, for one,

reprised her role as Mary Ann

in three reunion TV movies:

“Rescue From Gilligan’s Island” (1978),

“The Castaways on Gilligan’s Island” (1979)

and “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” (1981).
