‘I have been part of a call to action

for a public holiday called Windrush Day on 22 June,

the anniversary of the arrival of the MV Empire Windrush

at Tilbury Docks in 1948.’

The Windrush shaped Britain.

Why not recognise that?

June marks 70 years

since the start of the postwar immigration boom.

A national holiday would be a fitting tribute

In 1962, the young photographer Howard Grey

captured the last of the Windrush immigrants

as they disembarked from the boat train

at Waterloo station in London.

The extraordinary pictures he took, however,

were not processed for more than five decades

until advances in scanning technology

brought the underexposed negatives to life.

He’s very youthful.

It complicates the story.

They are so formal

British people to be so, too.

I imagine they’d have been startled

to see the untidy, dirty-nailed porters.’

After Windrush – Paulette Wilson's visit to Jamaica, 50 years on        Video        The Guardian        7 October 2019

A letter from the British government

classifying Paulette Wilson as an illegal immigrant

shook her sense of identity and belonging.

‘Hostile environment’ policies years in the making

meant that Wilson and other victims of the Windrush scandal

had their right to residency in the UK called into question.

She had been detained for a week

pending imminent deportation

though she had done nothing wrong.

It was devastating,

but luckily she was released

before she was deported.

Here we follow Wilson

as she returns to Jamaica for the first time in 50 years,

trying to make sense of her place in the world

and rebuild a sense of security and belonging

Alford Gardner arrived in the UK

on the Empire Windrush 70 years ago.

One of the only ones left to tell the tale,

he remembers a happy ship,

dances and round-the-clock calypso.

As Theresa May faces criticism

over the Windrush scandal, three of those affected

– Glenda Caesar, Sarah O'Connor and Briggs Levi Maynard –

tell how it feels to be rejected by their country.

Describing heartache, cruelty and spiralling problems,

they say the government will have to go much further

than an apology to make amends for their treatment
