Central American conflict
alarmed Washington
One of the
most interesting facets
of Ronald Reagan's presidency
was his
apparent obsession
with Central America.
President
Reagan
became convinced
that the Sandinistas'
1979 victory in Nicaragua
could spark
off revolution
throughout the region
and threaten the security
of the United States.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/269619.stm
The scheme,
which unfolded
over a two-year period
beginning in late 1985,
started with illegal arms sales
to Iran.
Selling weapons to Tehran,
which was at war with Iraq at the
time,
had two objectives.
One was to enlist Iran's
assistance
in freeing American hostages
being held in Lebanon.
Among them was William Buckley,
the CIA station chief in Beirut.
Buckley
was ultimately killed by his
captors,
though other hostages were
released.
In turn, profits from Iran's
purchase at highly inflated
prices
for the weapons
— which were routed through
Israel —
were used
for the scheme's other objective:
buying arms
for anti-communist rebels
known as Contras
who were fighting to topple
the elected Marxist government
of Nicaragua.
Those weapons purchases were done
in defiance of a congressional
ban
on aid to the Contras.

The space

blows up 73 seconds after liftoff,
disintegrating

off central Florida
and killing its crew of seven
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/science/space/14stever.html

On January 28, 1986,
the Space Shuttle Challenger and her seven-member crew were
lost
when a ruptured O-ring in the right Solid Rocket Booster
caused an explosion soon after launch.
This photograph, taken a few seconds after the accident,
shows the Space Shuttle Main Engines and Solid Rocket Booster
exhaust plumes entwined around a ball of gas from the External
Tank.
Because shuttle launches had become almost routine
after fifty
successful missions,
those watching the shuttle launch in person and on television
found the sight of the explosion especially shocking and
difficult to believe
until NASA confirmed the accident.

US sets up task
force
to handle cruise crisis
The murder of Leon Klinghoffer
was merciless and cruel.
He was a 69-year-old New Yorker
on a Mediterranean cruise
with his wife Marilyn in October
1985
when their ship, the Achille
Lauro,
was hijacked by four people
from the Palestinian Liberation
Front.
They held the passengers
and crew hostage.
Their demands to release
50 Palestinians in Israeli jails
were not met,
and they were refused permission
to dock in Syria.
The hijackers singled out
Leon Klinghoffer.
He was Jewish
and in a wheelchair from a
stroke.
They shot him
in the head and chest
and threw him overboard.
Leon Klinghoffer's death
became a symbol for many
of the costs and fears of
terrorism.
