Footprint: Remembering the Twin Towers
Video Op-Docs The New York Times
7 September 2018
With the anniversary of 9/11 approaching,
this week’s Op-Doc is
“Footprint: Where the
Towers Stood,”
by Sara Newens.
The film paints an intimate portrait
of one day’s visitors to the 9/11 Memorial
— and the ways grief, curiosity
and everyday
life mix and coexist.
It’s a profound exploration of a public
space
designed to sustain and extend public
memory.

Khalid Sheik / Shaikh Mohammed trial
alleged mastermind
of the September 11 attacks
After Mohammed's capture
in Pakistan in 2003,

New York Times
On the morning
of Sept. 11, 2001,
Fred R. Conrad,
a New York Times
staff
photographer,
was fertilizing his lawn
in New Jersey.
“I was
in shorts and Wellies,”
said Mr.
Conrad,
whose wife called him
from a New York-bound
bus
with the news.
When she returned home,
“I remember the two of us
just watching
the
towers fall
in our living room,”
he said.
(...)
“When I started
seeing engineers down there
working to actually
create something,”
Mr. Conrad said,
“then it became for me
a
very, very positive place.”
So when he thought
about the 10-year
anniversary of 9/11,
Mr. Conrad wanted to tell
the story of the
engineers.
Engineers, ironworkers,
concrete surveyors,
executives,
cement masons, architects,
stress technicians.
He shot a series
of portraits of workers
whose
backgrounds differ,
and whose emotional
connections
to the project
vary,
but whose efforts
have contributed
to the
reconstruction
of a very fraught space.

Portraits of Grief
Three days
after the Sept. 11 attacks,
reporters at The New York Times,
armed with stacks of homemade
missing-persons
fliers,
began interviewing friends
and relatives of
the missing
and writing brief portraits
of their lives
to
create “Portraits of Grief.”
Not meant
to be obituaries
in any traditional
sense,
they were informal
and impressionistic,
often centered
on a single story

idiosyncratic detail.
