Frederick Douglass    1818-1895

Frederick Douglass

was an abolitionist.

Born to a slave mother

and an unknown white father,

he spent his childhood in slavery

but secretly learned to read.

As a teenager,

he was hired out

to a brutal overseer

before escaping

to the North.

Douglass

became

a powerful orator

and a leading voice

in the struggle

against slavery.

In 1845,

his autobiography

("Narrative of the Life

of Frederick Douglass,

an American Slave:

Written by Himself")

was published

to great acclaim.
