How the rise of African creators impacted black culture        Video        G        12 November 2020

In recent years,

Africans on the continent and in the diaspora

have become leading voices in black culture

– in music, film, fashion, social media, comedy and even our memes.

When Grace Shutti was growing up,

black culture usually referred to African Americans.

But from Beyoncé's visual album, Black is King,

to Marvel's Black Panther

and musician Diddy executive

producing the Nigerian pop star Burna Boy's album,

the shift to embrace African art has been seismic.

Grace investigates how this came about

Why should you read “Fahrenheit 451”?        Video        TED-Ed        Iseult Gillespie        22 January 2019

Ray Bradbury’s novel

imagines a world where books are banned- and possessing,

let alone reading them, is forbidden.

The protagonist, Montag,

is a fireman responsible for destroying what remains.

The story raises the question: how can you preserve your mind

in a society where free will, self-expression and curiosity are under fire?

Iseult Gillespie examines what makes the dystopian novel a classic.

Lewis Hine:

The child labour photos

that led to change

Lewis Hine

is most famous

for his photographs

of the construction workers

who helped build

the Empire State Building

in 1930.

But in the years before

he celebrated

the heroic labour of these men

working high above Manhattan,

Hine used his photographs

to campaign for social reform.

In 1908

the then-sociology professor was hired

by the National Child Labor Committee

to document

how children as young as seven

were working

in cotton mills and coal mines.

Over a decade

he took thousands of photographs

that helped convince US lawmakers

to introduce new industrial regulations

to protect children.
