Crackdown, Internment camps, Forced sterilisation, Torture
Forced to leave China At 65, Imam Madi Toleukhan is one of the oldest refugees in Bekbolat, Kazakhstan, where more than 100 families took shelter after fleeing the Chinese regime. ‘We were richer back there. I owned a herd, but I was too afraid for my sons, my grandchildren and their future: I came to Kazakhstan to save them. I didn’t want them to be the fourth generation to suffer at the hands of the Chinese government,’ he says

Qelbinur Sidik, a former teacher coerced to work in China’s internment camps, speaks about her forced sterilisation at the age of 50, under a government campaign to suppress birth rates of women from Muslim minorities.
Sidik said the crackdown swept up not just women likely to fall pregnant, but those well beyond normal childbearing ages.
Messages she got from local authorities said women aged 19 to 59 were expected to have intrauterine devices (IUDs) fitted or undergo sterilisation. G 8 September 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc4hwH0TmSo
Why more than a million Uighurs are being held in camps in China G 24 July 2020
Why more than a million Uighurs are being held in camps in China Video Guardian News 24 July 2020
In Xinjiang province, China, more than a million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities are being held in "re-education" camps which the Chinese government claims are benign vocational centres teaching useful career skills.
But former camp detainees have described them as de facto prisons implementing mass brainwashing and obedience to the Communist party.
As more evidence emerges of torture, forced sterilisation of women and other methods of population reduction, should the situation in Xinjiang be termed a genocide?

China: Why They Must Free Our Parents From Concentration Camps Video NYT Opinion 19 August 2019
In the video Op-Ed above, three Chinese citizens whose parents disappeared demand their release from China’s “re-education camps.”
The government is estimated to have detained over one million people.
The goal: to force China’s Uighur ethnic minority to assimilate.
China’s decades-long campaign against the Uighur minority has surged in recent years through the construction of hundreds of detention camps.
Even outside of detention centers, millions of Uighurs in China’s Xinjiang region live in a virtual prison.
The surveillance state deploys sophisticated technology, including facial recognition tracking, compulsory apps that monitor mobile phones, and even DNA collection.
China has justified its actions as a fight against religious extremism within the predominantly Muslim ethnic minority.
The state has also defended the camps as “boarding schools” for job retraining. Yet community leaders, including secular citizens and academics, have been targeted for detention.
The international community has widely condemned China’s actions.
The United States Congress is considering legislation to do so.
And, in late July, China claimed to have released most detainees — yet experts and on-the-ground reporting suggest that the detention camps persist, and are even expanding. YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbN-yF5d2QU

If It Were My Home
The headlines tell a lot about the crisis in Yemen: internal strife, evacuations of international aid workers, Saudi Arabian airstrikes.
But you may have one very basic question that you can't easily find an answer for: How big is Yemen, anyway?
You can look at maps and check out Wikipedia but wouldn't it be great to just to slap an outline of Yemen on top of a map of the United States to get a sense of its size?
IfItWereMyHome.com lets you do just that.
