One Family’s Journey to Rebuild Their Home After Hurricane Helene

After Hurricane Helene swept through Yancey County, North Carolina, in September 2024,

the Hill family fought hard for every federal aid dollar available to rebuild their home.

They were displaced by the deadliest inland hurricane on record.

A year later, they are among the first in their community to almost finish rebuilding.

They are the lucky ones

who succeeded in navigating an arduous federal disaster aid system.

Many families have not achieved the same results.

Even with the head start

that the Federal Emergency Management Agency aid provided,

it has been a year full of toil for the Hills.

An analysis by ProPublica and The Assembly

of the 10 counties in North Carolina hardest hit by Helene shows

that in many rural counties like Yancey,

higher-income earners typically received more of this money than lower-income ones.

The Trump administration has threatened to eliminate FEMA.

Although the president praised the agency after flooding in Texas this year,

its future remains uncertain.

As the Hills prepare to finally return to their home,
