Why Addiction Keeps Pulling Me Back
NYT May 2018
Why Addiction Keeps Pulling Me Back
Video Op-Docs
NYT May 2018
This week’s Op-Doc is Paul Szynol’s “The Pull,”
a searing exploration of the inner life of John Bixby,
a New Hampshire man struggling with drug addiction.
Beginning just before Bixby’s release from jail,
the film follows his lonely journey
across the ghostly landscape
of New England’s opioid crisis.
As Szynol writes,
Bixby’s story is “an agonizing battle
between his desire to use and his stiff
but weakening resolve
to stay clean.”
The result
is a lyrical tale of hope and disappointment,
told without judgment,
with glimpses of astonishing
vulnerability.
