William Horatio Powell    USA    1892-1984

actor who personified

the suave and sophisticate

 leading man in the 1930's

and 40's

(...)

The actor's wry,

winning cynicism

brightened such classics

as the comedy-murder mystery

''Thin Man'' series,

the farce ''My Man Godfrey,''

the musical spectacle

''The Great Ziegfeld''

and the period comedy

''Life With Father.''

Mr. Powell's ideal foil

was the chic and peppery

Myrna Loy.

They co- starred 13 times,

including six ''Thin Man'' movies

in which he,

as a retired sleuth, Nick Charles,

and she,

as his tag-along socialite wife, Nora,

matched martinis and mirth,

sharing amiable brickbats

and trapping wrongdoers

in the urbane movies from stories

by Dashiell Hammett.

Mae West Vamped and Winked.

She Also Blazed a Trail We’re Still Following.

New editions of her early films

reveal a screenwriter with a deep interest in lives on the margins.

That was just one reason the censors couldn’t abide her.

born Sylvanus Richard Mattimore

silent screen actor

of a young World War I aviator,

which he had himself been,

in “Wings,”

Buddy Rogers

Gary Cooper.

While he was to make

about 250 movies,

the 1927 film, regarded as

the last of the silent spectaculars

about World War I, remained

a high point of his career.
