Edward Windsor / Edward VIII r. 1936 (1894-1972)

Edward had succeeded his father George V

just 11 months earlier.

But, as his affair with the American divorcee

Wallis Simpson became public,

he was forced to choose

between his throne and his lover

and opted to abdicate.

His coronation never took place,

and the throne went to his younger brother,

who became George VI.

The crisis created political and public divisions

and rocked the monarchy.
