Father Mychal's Blessing:

Remembering the September 11 Victim Who Died Praying for Others

Video        StoryCorps        2 September 2021

“We come to bury his heart, but not his love. Never his love.”

Father Michael Duffy recalls

delivering the sermon for his close friend,

Father Mychal Judge,

who was the first certified fatality of the September 11th attacks.

Father Michael remembers Father Mychal’s endearing mannerisms,

his constant positivity,

and, above all, his profound impact on everyone he knew

Footprint: Remembering the Twin Towers

Video        Op-Docs        The New York Times        7 September 2018

With the anniversary of 9/11 approaching,

this week’s Op-Doc is

“Footprint: Where the Towers Stood,”

by Sara Newens.

The film paints an intimate portrait

of one day’s visitors to the 9/11 Memorial

— and the ways grief, curiosity

and everyday life mix and coexist.

It’s a profound exploration of a public space

designed to sustain and extend public memory.

This now-famous photograph has become iconic,

and inspired an article in Esquire magazine,

New York Times

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001,

Fred R. Conrad,

a New York Times staff photographer,

was fertilizing his lawn in New Jersey.

“I was in shorts and Wellies,”

said Mr. Conrad,

whose wife called him

from a New York-bound bus

with the news.

When she returned home,

“I remember the two of us

just watching the towers fall

in our living room,” he said.

(...)

“When I started

seeing engineers down there

working to actually create something,”

Mr. Conrad said,

“then it became for me

a very, very positive place.”

So when he thought about the 10-year

anniversary of 9/11,

Mr. Conrad wanted to tell

the story of the engineers.

Engineers, ironworkers,

concrete surveyors, executives,

cement masons, architects,

stress technicians.

He shot a series of portraits of workers

whose backgrounds differ,

and whose emotional connections

to the project vary,

but whose efforts have contributed

to the reconstruction

of a very fraught space.
