“We come to bury his heart, but not his love. Never his love.”
Father Michael Duffy recalls
delivering the sermon for his
close friend,
Father Mychal Judge,
who was the first certified fatality of
the September 11th attacks.
Father Michael remembers Father Mychal’s endearing mannerisms,
his constant positivity,
and, above all, his profound impact on everyone he knew

With the anniversary of 9/11 approaching,
this week’s Op-Doc is
“Footprint: Where the
Towers Stood,”
by Sara Newens.
The film paints an intimate portrait
of one day’s visitors to the 9/11 Memorial
— and the ways grief, curiosity
and everyday
life mix and coexist.
It’s a profound exploration of a public
space
designed to sustain and extend public
memory.

alleged mastermind
of the September 11 attacks
After Mohammed's capture
in Pakistan in 2003,
he and the other four defendants
— identified as Walid bin Attash,
Ramzi bin al-Shibh, Ammar al-Baluchi
and Mustafa al-Hawsawi —

in a network of overseas
secret CIA prisons,
known as "black sites,"
before being turned over
to the U.S. military.
In addition to his role
in the twin tower strikes,
Mohammed has also has been linked
to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing,
the murder of journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002,
and the 2003 Jakarta Marriott bombing,
as well as several other attacks
orchestrated by the al-Qaida network.
The Sept. 11 attacks

New York Times
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001,
Fred R. Conrad,
a New York Times staff
photographer,
was fertilizing his lawn in New Jersey.
“I was in shorts and Wellies,”
said Mr.
Conrad,
whose wife called him
from a New York-bound
bus
with the news.
When she returned home,
“I remember the two of us
just watching the
towers fall
in our living room,” he said.
(...)
“When I started
seeing engineers down there
working to actually create something,”
Mr. Conrad said,
“then it became for me
a
very, very positive place.”
So when he thought about the 10-year
anniversary of 9/11,
Mr. Conrad wanted to tell
the story of the
engineers.
Engineers, ironworkers,
concrete surveyors,
executives,
cement masons, architects,
stress technicians.
He shot a series of portraits of workers
whose
backgrounds differ,
and whose emotional connections
to the project
vary,
but whose efforts have contributed
to the
reconstruction
of a very fraught space.

Portraits of Grief
Three days after the Sept. 11 attacks,
reporters at The New York Times,
armed with stacks of homemade
missing-persons
fliers,
began interviewing friends
and relatives of
the missing
and writing brief portraits of their lives
to
create “Portraits of Grief.”
Not meant to be obituaries
in any traditional
sense,
they were informal
and impressionistic,
often centered on a single story
