Raymond Thomas Odierno    USA    1954-2021

four-star Army general

who was an influential architect

of the surge of American forces

during the Iraq war

that helped quell sectarian killings

and increase stability in the country

(...)

General Odierno

also served as the Army chief of staff,

the service’s senior officer,

from 2011 to 2015.

During that time,

he reshaped the way many soldiers

were trained and deployed,

with some conventional units

placed under Special Operations commanders

and others assigned to regions of the world

viewed as emerging security risks, like Africa.

General Odierno

cut an intimidating figure,

at 6 feet 5 inches and 250 pounds

with a shaved head,

but he was outgoing

and popular with his troops.

He served three tours of duty in Iraq

from 2003 to 2010

and rose to become chief commander

of all allied forces in the country.

He commanded

the Fourth Infantry Division,

which was involved

in the capture of Saddam Hussein

in northern Iraq in December 2003,

in a mission

that combined mechanized infantry units

and the elite counterterrorism forces.

After U.S. Special Operations forces

dragged the disheveled

and heavily bearded Iraqi dictator

from an underground hide-out

on a sheep farm north of Baghdad,

the general uttered one

of the war’s most notable comments.

“He was in the bottom of a hole

with no way to fight back,”

General Odierno said.

“He was caught like a rat.”

General Odierno returned to Iraq

for a second tour of duty in 2006,

this time as the Army’s

second-ranking general.

He returned with deep skepticism

that the military strategy at the time

would contain Iraq’s guerrilla insurgency

and the escalating sectarian killings

between Iraq Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

General Odierno favored

the rapid deployment

of about 20,000 additional troops

— the surge, as it was called —

to help quell the insurgency.

Collateral Murder

Video        Overview        5th April 2010    10:44 EST

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video

depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people

in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad

-- including two Reuters news staff.

Reuters has been trying to obtain the video

through the Freedom of Information Act,

without success since the time of the attack.

The video,

shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site,

clearly shows the unprovoked slaying

of a wounded Reuters employee

and his rescuers.

Two young children involved in the rescue

were also seriously wounded.

Anfal was the name given

to the military campaign

that was waged by Saddam Hussein

and members of his Baath party.

It was a campaign

to attack the Kurdish population

in the north part of Iraq

- that's the oil-rich part of the country

near the Iranian border.

And during the Anfal

- during the operation,

Iraqi forces

dropped chemical weapons

on dozens of Kurdish villages

- mustard gas and nerve agents.

And they are different reports

about how many people

those attacks actually killed.

Human rights groups estimate

that number to be around 100,000 people,

but Iraqi sources say it could be closer

to 200,000.

Index of U.S. troop deaths in Iraq    2009

When the 1,000th

American soldier

died in September 2004,

the insurgency

was just gaining steam.

The 2,000th death came

as Iraq held

its first elections in decades,

in October 2005.

The U.S. announced

its 3,000th loss

on the last day of 2006,

at the end of a year

rocked by sectarian violence.

The 4,000th death comes

with the war further out

of the public eye,

and replaced by other topics

on the front burner

of the U.S. presidential campaigns.

The number killed in Iraq

is far less than

in other modern American wars.

In Vietnam,

the U.S. lost on average

about 4,850 troops a year

from 1963-75.

In the Korean war,from 1950-53,

the U.S. lost

about 12,300 soldiers a year.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi    1966-June 7, 2006

born Ahmad Fadeel al-Nazal al-Khalayleh

Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq,

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi,

was killed in an American airstrike

on an isolated safe house

north of Baghdad at 6:15 p.m.

local time on Wednesday,

top American and Iraqi officials

said today.

Islamic militant Web sites

linked to Al Qaeda

quickly confirmed the death,

saying Mr. Zarqawi

had been rewarded

with "martyrdom"

for his role in the war here.

At a joint news conference

with Iraq's prime minister,

Nuri Kamal al-Maliki,

the top American military

commander in Iraq,

Gen. George W. Casey Jr.,

said Mr. Zarqawi's body

had been positively identified

by fingerprints,

"facial recognition"

and "known scars."

Six people were killed

in the strike:

Mr. Zarqawi,

his spiritual adviser

and four other people

including a woman and a child,

the military said.

The strike

had been accompanied

by a ground assault

involving American

and Iraqi troops.

The announcement

of Mr. Zarqawi's death,

shortly before noon today

in Baghdad,

4 a.m. Eastern time,

marked a major watershed

in the war.

With a $25 million American bounty

on his head,

the Jordanian-born Mr. Zarqawi

has been the most-wanted man in Iraq

for his leadership

of Islamic terrorist groups

that have carried out

many of the most brutal attacks of the war,

including scores of suicide bombings,

kidnappings and beheadings.

In his late 30's,

he had been named

"Prince of Al Qaeda" in Iraq

by Osama bin Laden,

Al Qaeda's fugitive leader.

"Today, we have managed

to put an end to Zarqawi,"

said Mr. Maliki,

who took office three weeks ago

at the head of Iraq's

first full-term government

since the overthrow

of Saddam Hussein.

(...)

Mr. Zarqawi,

whose adopted name was taken

from the town of Zarqa in Jordan

where the insurgent leader was raised,

had assumed an almost mythic status

for his long run of terrorist attacks

and statements issued

on Islamic militant Web sites

that declared his goal

to be the establishment

of a new "caliphate" in Iraq.

The term is taken from the term

given to the vast areas

of the Arab world

that came under strict Islamic rule

within 100 years

of the death of the Prophet Mohammed

in the 7th century A.D.

After twice narrowly escaping capture

by American troops

in the past 18 months,

Mr. Zarqawi became increasingly

bold in recent months,

issuing videotaped speeches

on Islamic militant Web sites,

vowing victory against the "crusaders"

who had invaded Iraq,

meaning American, British

and other Western forces.

The speeches also called on

Sunni Arabs to kill "converters,"

meaning Iraqi Shiites,

effectively inciting civil war here.

American military commanders

have said that Mr. Zarqawi

personally beheaded

some of those kidnapped

by his followers,

and identified him as the mastermind

of one of the first major

suicide bombing attacks,

a strike in August 2003 that destroyed

the United Nations

headquarters in Baghdad

and killed 22 people,

including Sergio Viera de Mello,

the head of the United Nations Mission

here.

May 2003

Paul Bremer

issues an order dissolving Iraq's ARmy

When President Bush

convened a meeting

of his National Security Council

on May 22, 2003,

his special envoy in Iraq

made a statement

that caught many of the participants

by surprise.

In a video presentation from Baghdad,

L. Paul Bremer III

informed the president and his aides

that he was about to issue

an order formally dissolving Iraq’s Army.

The decree

was issued the next day.

The broad outlines of the decision

are now widely known,

defended by proponents

as necessary to ensure

that Saddam Hussein’s influence

did not outlive his ouster from power.

But with the fifth anniversary

of the start of the war approaching,

some participants have provided

in interviews their first detailed,

on-the-record accounts of a decision

that is widely seen

as one of the most momentous

and contentious of the war,

assailed by critics as all but ensuring

that American forces would face

a growing insurgency

led by embittered Sunnis

who led much of the army.

30 September 2004

At least 46 people were killed

and 200 injured

in a series of bomb attacks

targeting US and Iraqi forces

in and around Baghdad today.

Dozens of the victims

were children.

The violence began

with a suicide car bombing

near a US checkpoint

in the town of Abu Ghraib,

west of the Iraqi capital,

at around 9.45am local time

(0645 BST).

Two Iraqi police officers

and a US soldier

were killed in the attack,

and doctors said

that as many as 60 people

- including women and children -

were wounded.

A few hours later,

at least 42 people were killed

in three near-simultaneous explosions

apparently targeting a US convoy

in Baghdad's al-Amel neighbourhood.

Debate on the Iraq crisis

in the house of Commons

"There are glib and sometimes

foolish comparisons

with the 1930s.

No one here is an appeaser.

But the only relevant

point of analogy

is that with history,

we know what happened.

We can look back and say:

there's the time;

that was the moment;

for example, when Czechoslovakia

was swallowed up by the Nazis

- that's when

we should have acted."

Iraq's alleged 'weapons of mass destruction'

On Feb. 5, 2003,

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell

sat in front of members

of the U.N. Security Council.

He'd been a staunch critic

of U.S. intervention

against Iraq's authoritarian leader,

Saddam Hussein.

But with the world watching,

Powell made a case for war.

"My colleagues,

every statement I make today

is backed up by sources

— solid sources," he said.

"These are not assertions.

What we're giving you

are facts and conclusions

based on solid intelligence."

Powell used information

that intelligence officials assured him

was credible.

There were reconnaissance photos,

elaborate maps and charts,

and even taped phone conversation

 between senior members

of Iraq's military.

"Saddam Hussein

has chemical weapons,"

Powell said.

"Saddam Hussein

has used such weapons.

And Saddam Hussein

has no compunction

about using them again

— against his neighbors,

and against his own people."

Powell repeatedly used one phrase

during his hour-long speech:

"weapons of mass destruction."

He said those words

a total of 17 times.

It was the phrase

the Bush administration

kept publicly using

to help justify invading Iraq.

A month and a half

after the U.N. speech,

President Bush ordered air strikes

over Baghdad.

It marked the beginning

of a military operation

"to disarm Iraq, to free its people,

and to defend the world

from grave danger,"

Bush said in a televised address

to the nation.

U.S. forces toppled Hussein's regime

in a matter of weeks,

and the search intensified for evidence

of Iraq's so-called

"weapons of mass destruction."

But the weapons

were nowhere to be found.
