Why are so many nurses quitting the NHS in England?

Video        BBC News        17 January 2018

Mary quit as a nurse after two years

after experiencing stress and depression.

She says she's sad she can't be a nurse

in The National Health Service

"without sacrificing my mental health".

Last year,

33,000 nurses in England left the NHS

- more than 10% of the workforce.

NHS bosses say

they are working

to improve staff retention.

The National Health Service explained

Video        Guardian Explainers        The Guardian        18 January 2016

The NHS has been likened

to a national religion,

such is its importance

in the British psyche.

But with a tight squeeze on its budgets

and unprecedented demand

for its services it remains a political issue.

In fact, the entire history of the NHS,

as well as charting major clinical progress,

can be seen as a standoff

between doctors and politicians.

If you want to fight infection, think about opening a window

Traditional hospitals were built with high ceilings and large windows

to ensure the removal of infectious pathogens away from patients,

The birth of the NHS - in pictures

The NHS turns 70 on 5 July. In its lifetime,

it has transformed the health of the nation,

delivering huge medical advances

and eradicating diseases

such as polio and diphtheria.

With over 1.5 million staff,

the NHS is the UK’s largest employer

Celebrating Black NHS nurses through the decades – in pictures

The NHS is one of only two things

that hold Britain together as a community.

The second being the BBC.

During Covid-19

these two national treasures

have become our guiding strength.

Black people

have been an integral part of the NHS

since the 40s.

I am very proud to say

my mother worked for the NHS

for more than 35 years before she retired.

These institutions are worth fighting for.
