Kentucky Derby 2020:

Empty stands and armed militias at America's most famous race

The 146th Kentucky Derby, won by Authentic in an upset,

was a surreal distillation

of the crises facing the United States in 2020.

America’s most famous thoroughbred race,

usually held the first Saturday in May,

was statged four months late

due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The fabled Churchill Downs racetrack was mostly quiet,

but multiple groups including armed militias

took part in protests and counter-protests outside

over police killings of unarmed Black Americans

How the Police Killed Breonna Taylor | Visual Investigations

Video        NYT        28 December 2020

None of the police officers

who raided Breonna Taylor’s home wore body cameras,

impeding the public from a full understanding of what happened.

The Times’s visual investigation team built a 3-D model of the scene

and pieced together critical sequences of events to show

how poor planning and shoddy police work led to a fatal outcome.

Breonna Taylor shooting

Ms. Taylor, 26,

an emergency medical technician,

The officers shot Ms. Taylor

at least eight times.
