Kindertransport
British rescue mission
that saved thousands of lives
during Second
World War
In the final months before the war,
the British parliament
took the extraordinary
step
of accepting 10,000 children
from across
Europe,
who traversed the continent by train
and
arrived by boat in British ports.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/23/
kindertransport-75th-anniversary-second-world-war
In 1938, nine months
before the Second World War,
England opened its borders
to around 10,000
children,
mostly Jewish,
who were fleeing the Nazi regime.
The children were sent,
without their parents,
out of Austria, Germany,
Poland and
Czechoslovakia
in a process that became
known as
Kindertransport.
Most Jewish families
were prevented from travelling abroad
by a lack of funds
or the stringent visa controls
imposed by countrie
such as Britain and the USA.
Following Kristallnacht,
the night of violence organised
against the
Jewish communities
in Greater Germany
(Germany, Austria and the
Sudetenland,
Czechoslovakia) on 9 November 1938,
pressure was placed on the British government
to relax immigration controls
for a limited
number of children.

Austria
Outbreak of the second world war
In 1938,
Jewish families under Nazi rule
were scrambling to get their children
out of the Reich.
Newspaper advertisements
were one avenue of escape.
Scores of children were “advertised”
in the pages of the Manchester Guardian,
their virtues and skills extolled in brief,
to fit the space.

Ministry of Food Posters
A new exhibition
at London's Imperial War Museum
(Feb 12 to Jan 3 2011)
pays tribute
to a nation's creativity and resourcefulness
in the face of wartime

food rationing.
Here is some of the eye-catching
British Government propaganda
used on the
'Kitchen Front'
during that time.

The following posters
were all
used during the Second World War
to encourage austerity and stoicism
on Britain's home front.
They form part of an exhibition
