Vietnam war    1960s-1975

1971 > Pentagon Papers

a secret history

of United States decision-making

on Vietnam,

commissioned in 1967

by the secretary of defense.

Their release

revealed for the first time

the extent to which successive

White House administrations

had intensified

American involvement in the war

while hiding their own doubts

about the chances of success.

the Pentagon Papers

It is to many

the greatest journalistic scoop

in a generation – the publication

of a 7,000-page government report

that laid bare

how successive US administrations

had escalated the Vietnam war

while concealing doubts

that the action could ever be

successful.

That report

– the Pentagon Papers –

was made public in 1971

by the New York Times

over legal objections

by the Nixon administration.
