This is certainly turning out

to be quite the year for 50th anniversaries.

Fifty years ago next month,

the Beatles made their U.S. debut

on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

In 1964,

President Lyndon Johnson started the War on Poverty.

And 50 years ago Saturday,

the surgeon general of the United States

issued the single most important report

that would ever come out of that office.

It linked cigarette smoking to illness and death.

It’s hard to remember now

just how prevalent smoking used to be.

In the mid-1960s,

around half the men in the country smoked;

for women, the number was 35 percent.

People smoked in their offices, smoked in restaurants,

smoked on airplanes.

Indeed, Paul Billings of the American Lung Association

recalls that the airlines often gave passengers

small packets of cigarettes

when they boarded the plane.

MARYSVILLE, Ind. —

Here in this small farmland community,

a single water tower emblazoned with the town’s name

— the most commanding structure in the town —

appeared to be the only thing not battered by the storms

that cut a swath through southeastern Indiana.

Of the two dozen or so houses that once stood here,

only a handful remained upright.

Some were reduced to debris

— piles of wood and possessions.

Others were virtually erased.

On Saturday, the drone of chainsaws

and diesel trucks filled the afternoon air,

replacing the whistling of the tornado

and the clamor of warning sirens

that preceded it just the day before.

“There used to be a house there,

and another one there,”

said Jeremy Fraim, 28, pointing at large open lots

next to what was left of his own house.

Mr. Fraim was at work when the storm passed through,

and he arrived home Friday evening

to find his one-story house torn apart.

“Just gone,” he said. “Everything gone.

From the road,

it looked like one brick wall was standing.”

but this fall started buying from small online retailers instead.

The prices are higher,

but Dr. Pollack says he now has a clear conscience.

“I don’t feel they behave in a way

that I want to support with my consumer dollars,”

TRUCKEE, Calif. — When Mimi Ash arrived

at her mountain chalet here for a weekend ski trip,

she discovered that someone had broken into the home

and changed the locks.

When she finally got into the house, it was empty.

All of her possessions were gone:

furniture, her son’s ski medals,

winter clothes and family photos.

Also missing was a wooden box,

its top inscribed with the words “Together Forever,”

that contained the ashes of her late husband, Robert.

The culprit, Ms. Ash soon learned,

was not a burglar but her bank.

According to a federal lawsuit

filed in October by Ms. Ash,

Bank of America had wrongfully

foreclosed on her house

and thrown out her belongings,

without alerting Ms. Ash beforehand.

In an era when millions of homes

have received foreclosure notices nationwide,

lawsuits detailing bank break-ins like the one

at Ms. Ash’s house keep surfacing.

And in the wake of the scandal involving shoddy,

sometimes illegal paperwork that has buffeted

the nation’s biggest banks in recent months,

critics say these situations reinforce their claims

that the foreclosure process is fundamentally flawed.

Although the original foreclosure was rescinded,

as promised, Ms. Ash,

who discovered the break-in in January 2009,

says it is hard for her to visit the house anymore

and she will probably let it lapse into foreclosure.

At this point, she said, it is just a

“sad reminder that 22 years of my history vanished.”

“This is in essence a burglary,” said Ms. Ash,

walking through the vacant home,

with its four levels and commanding mountain views.

“But when a burglar goes in,

they don’t take your photos and your husband’s ashes.”

“This used to be my haven

I’d run away to,”

she said.

“Now I run away from it.”
