Here's What They Look Like.

Tent courthouses

are the administration’s latest move

in its “Remain in Mexico” policy,

forcing asylum seekers to wait

in one of Mexico’s most dangerous states

until their hearings.

We track the tents’ expansion

through satellite imagery

— and explain how they could make

the asylum process even harder.

How Walls Ended Up Along the U.S.-Mexico Border

Video        NYT News        The New York Times        25 July 2019

The border between the U.S. and Mexico

has long been marked by barriers.

But they weren’t always about deterring immigration.

Here’s how the modern border came to be,

starting with the year 1848.

NYT    18 July 2019

Hear the Words of Detained Migrant Children

Video        NYT Opinion        The New York Times        18 July 2019

In the video Op-Ed above,

children read testimonies

given by young migrants

detained in Customs and Border Protection facilities.

They reveal harrowing stories of children living in cages,

going hungry and tending to infants without their parents.

Border Patrol

has been detaining thousands of children,

sometimes for weeks,

in conditions no child anywhere should suffer.

At a June hearing before a federal appeals court,

judges were stunned by the administration’s arguments

that these children were kept in “safe and sanitary” facilities,

as required by the Flores Settlement.

The overcrowding, long stays and inhumane,

possibly illegal living conditions

are a result of the Trump administration’s

cruel immigration policies

and mismanagement

of the Department of Homeland Security,

which oversees the border agency.

Barring exceptional circumstances,

the legal limit for Border Patrol

to detain children is 72 hours.

The agency

is then supposed to transfer children

to the custody

of the Office of Refugee Resettlement

for a maximum of 20 days.

But the resettlement office

has been keeping children far longer,

creating a backlog across the entire system.

As a result, Border Patrol centers

have not been quickly processing

unaccompanied children and migrant families,

who have recently been crossing the border

in record-breaking numbers.

Detained children

provided the testimonies read in this video

to lawyers who visited Border Patrol centers

as part of an ongoing investigation of detention facilities.

Hotel U.S.A.: Refugees Spend Their First Night in America

Video        Op-Docs        The New York Times        2 December 2018

What’s it like to encounter

your new country for the first time?

For some refugees to the United States,

it means a night in the strange nowhere land of an airport hotel,

as shown in “Hotel U.S.A.,” this week’s new Op-Doc.

Directed by Andrea Meller and Marisa Pearl,

the film is a fascinating group portrait of families

pausing to catch their breath

on their way to new homes across the country.

Video        G        2 July 2018

Eddy, 17, and Lilian, nine,

were separated from their mother

at the US border on 19 May.

The family was fleeing violence in Guatemala

– only to be ripped apart

under the Trump administration’s

'zero-tolerance' immigration policy.

Eddy and Lilian's mother was prosecuted

and sent to the T Don Hutto immigration detention centre

in central Texas.

For five weeks,

she had no idea where her two children were.

They had been left behind at a processing centre

and then flown to foster care in Grand Rapids, Michigan

– where they were held in separate homes.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order

ending the separation of children and parents

who cross the southern US border illegally.

The children were detained

while their parents faced legal proceedings.

While they waited for their parents to be released,

the children were put into inhospitable detention centres

furnished with metal cages and concrete floors.

Audio recordings released by a charity

reveal the distress many children were,

Five things to know about US child migrant separations

Video        BBC News        19 June 2018

At least 2,000 children in the US

have been separated from their families since April

as they crossed the border.

President Trump is facing heavy criticism

over the "zero-tolerance" policy,

under which adults who try to cross the border,

many planning to seek asylum, are placed in custody

and face criminal prosecution for illegal entry.

As a result,

hundreds of minors

are now being housed in detention centres,

and kept away from their parents.

The Killing Fields of Texas - Beyond the Border part one

Video        The Guardian        13 August 2014

Thousands of immigrants have died

on the ranches of Brooks County, Texas.

Most of the deaths occur

while migrants are trying to circumvent

the US Border Patrol’s inland checkpoint

and hike through rugged ranch lands.

Some ranchers are taking up arms

to fight back against the influx of migrants,

while others are setting up water stations and trying to save their lives.

However, as temperatures rise and the humanitarian crisis continues,

the deaths are at an all-time high.

For years,

she was the only Guatemalan consul

stationed on the south Texas border

As consul,

she was in charge of sending the remains of Guatemalan migrants

Surrounded by tragedies of her countrymen for years,

Caceres decided to step down as consul this year.

For the past decade,

Dr. Lori Baker has been exhuming

the remains of unidentified immigrants

who died on the US Mexico border.

This year, she is working with a team of undergraduates

and other forensic anthropologists

to try and identify the migrants buried in the Falfurrias cemetery.

Baker and others plan

to list the information on national missing persons databases

so that families from Guatemala and other countries

can find their relatives.

Whenever ranchers in rural Brooks County,

70 miles north of the Mexican border,

find a body, which is often these days,

they call the Brooks County Sheriff's Office.

Chief Deputy Urbino “Benny” Martinez and his deputies

are tasked with recovering the growing number of dead,

and placing them

in Department of Homeland Security-issued body bags

– black bags for the recently dead, white for skeletal remains.

The sight and smell of the dead

can linger with you for days.

It can give you nightmares if you let it.

Recovering human remains

in the heat of a South Texas summer

is not for the faint-hearted.
